New Zealand cinema has gained international renown with such directors as Peter Jackson, Vincent Ward, Lee Tamahori and Jane Campion and with such films as The Piano (1993), Once Were Warriors (1994), Whale Rider (Te kaieke tohora - 2002) and the Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-3). But the actual output of this cinematography remains unknown to majority of Polish audiences. It reveals the intriguing and multi-faceted character of New Zealand, close and exotic at one time, struggling with the question of its own cultural identity and with the powerful nature.
